AUFA Bargaining Update – July 2025
Athabasca University and AUFA continue to engage in respectful and productive bargaining sessions. The tone at the table has remained collegial, with both parties demonstrating a shared commitment to constructive dialogue. Both sides have been reasonable in their approach, and there has been meaningful movement on several AUFA priorities. The employer has listened to and demonstrated a willingness to consider AUFA’s proposals seriously. This spirit of collaboration has helped foster a positive environment for negotiations.
Signed-Off Articles and Agreements
Both parties have now signed off on several items:
Removal of the Letter of Understanding (LOU) on Deans: This LOU and related contract language has been officially removed as Deans are no longer in AUFA.
Article 5 – Term Appointments: Updated language for term hires tied to specific programs.
Article 22 – Resignation: Updated guidelines for professional and academic resignation from Athabasca University. These function as guidelines, as AUFA members may quit at any time.
LOU – Accommodation for People with Disabilities: This LOU continues principles and definitions relating to accommodation for members with disabilities. Updated the letter to remove dated references.
Many other articles are in active discussion with potential for further deals between both sides. These sign-offs represent tangible progress and reflect the thoughtful work being done at the table.
What’s Next?
The next bargaining session is scheduled for September 5, 2025, where we anticipate continuing discussions on outstanding issues, including monetary matters. A blog post focusing on the benefits will be released soon, so please keep an eye out for it. Additionally, AUFA will be circulating a survey to gather your input on benefits and our the upcoming monetary counter-proposal. Your feedback is essential in shaping our approach and ensuring your priorities are represented.
In solidarity,
The AUFA Bargaining Team
