Strikes and Lockouts

If AUFA and AU cannot agree upon the terms of a new collective agreement then one possible outcome is a strike or a lockout (or both). A strike is a cessation of work by employees intended to pressure the employer to agree to a set of proposals. A lockout is when an employer denies workers work (usually by restricting access to the workplace) in order to pressure workers to agree to a set of proposals. Assuming all legal requirements have been met, workers may strike, an employer may lockout, or both, on 72 hours of notice.
